The '''Service Program Manager''' is a position of responsibility appointed by the [[Captain]] who is responsible for encouraging and coordinating the [[team]]'s service activities for this field of emphasis.

==Position description==
The Service Program Manager is an appointed leader who encourages and coordinates the team's service activities. He keeps track of projects undertaken by the team as a whole and charts the efforts of individual team members. He works with an adult [[Service Program Adviser]] to plan and perform primary leadership for team special programs and events. He usually serves a 6- or 12-month term.

A '''reflection session''' is a requirement unique to the service field of emphasis; a service program activity is not complete until one is held.  During a reflection session the team is gathered to discuss the feelings experienced by the participants who served, the benefits of the meaningful service provided, and what improvements could make the activity better. A reflection session is held immediately or shortly after the activity, and is lead by the [[Team Coach]] together with the primary service program manager.

===Multiple concurrent program managers for this field===
The team captain may appoint multiple concurrent service program managers. When this is the case, each program manager will perform primary leadership for his own planned activity.

* Encourages Varsity Scouts to develop and maintain a service-oriented way of life.
* Communicates with the team members to determine how they can best become service-oriented.
* Works with other program managers to maximize the effectiveness of service opportunities throughout the team's activities.
* Takes advantage of guidance offered by the adult [[Service Program Adviser]].
* Sets a good example for fellow team members.
* Enthusiastically and [[uniform|correctly wears the Scout uniform]] (all four parts).
* Lives by the [[Scout Oath]] and [[Scout Law|Law]]. 
* Shows [[Scout Spirit|Scout spirit]]

==Procedure==
Service is an important way we fulfill our duty to God, our country and ourselves. Choose a project that is meaningful; even hard work if done for a worthy cause will bring joy that will remain throughout life. Generate and review a list of ideas for service activities with the adult Service Program Manager to begin the process of finding a project that is feasible; seek assistance from others to help find a project that will be the best use of the team's efforts. Plan and carry out the project using the activity plan worksheet to ensure needs, resources, safety, arrangements and costs are adequately prepared. When the activity is complete, hold a reflection session with the team and the team coach.

==Working with an adult advancement program adviser==
The [[Service Program Adviser]] is the adult counterpart to the Scout program manager. The program adviser helps and encourages the youth program manger to:
* Select service projects that provide meaningful assistance to individuals, families, organizations, etc., and fit within the standards of the BSA such as [[Scouting for Food]].
* Provide resources for potential service projects.
* Communicate with community and religious leaders the desire of your team to provide meaningful service.
* Assist Varsity Scouts in planning service projects necessary for advancement.
* Acquire materials, funds, or tools needed for service projects.
* Supervise the project to assure the safety and protection of all those involved.
