A Scout patrol is the basic unit or grouping of Scouts. Scout troops are composed of one or more patrols. Generally around eight members, a patrol is likely composed of Scouts who are close in age and rank to one another. They may even have been recently formed from a Webelos Den after bridging.

A patrol is expected to have its own meetings and activities in addition to ones at the troop level. At troop meetings and at troop events, the patrol participates together, often in good-natured competition with other patrols. They are expected to have a name, as well as Patrol Yell and a Patrol Flag, all of which a Scout Badge is required to know to advance to the Tenderfoot Rank.
