In 1910, the Boy Scouts of America announced 14 "Badges of Merit" in the temporary "Original edition" of the BSA Handbook:
- Ambulance
- Clerk
- Cyclist
- Electrician
- Fireman
- Gardener
- Horseman
- Marksman
- Master-at-Arms
- Musician
- Pioneer
- Seaman
- Signaller
- Stalker
In 1911, Master-at-Arms was dropped, the others were retained with changed names, 44 new ones were added, and all became know as "Merit Badges".
