National Youth Leadership Society has been discontinued. (See Discontinued awards.)

The National Youth Leadership Society was a program whose purpose was to recognize youth members of the Boy Scouts of America who have learned and practiced outstanding leadership skills. The awards were made available through a national grant to the Boy Scouts of America from the Readers' Digest - Wallace Foundation Fund.

Qualifications. Only those youths in Boy Scout Troops, Venturing Crews, or Sea Scout Ships who have successfully completed qualifying leadership development courses and performed eligible leadership roles may be nominated for induction to the National Youth Leadership Society. The nomination may come ONLY from the council, not from units or individuals. This national honor is bestowed upon deserving youth members and only upon recommendation by the council. Inductions may be made at the council, area, regional, or national level. There is no limit to the number of nominations a council may make.

  1. The candidate must have completed at least ONE of the following leadership development courses.
    1. Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST)
    2. Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC)
    3. Introduction to Leadership Skills for Ships (ILSS)
  2. The candidate must have completed at least THREE of the following leadership development courses.
    1. National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)
    2. National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE)
    3. Kodiak Challenge
    4. Sea Scout Experience Advanced Leadership Training (SEAL)
    5. Order of the Arrow National Leadership Seminar
  3. The candidate must have earned at least 4 points from serving in any of the following positions.
    1. Patrol leader (2 points)
    2. Senior patrol leader (3 points)
    3. Other troop leadership positions (1 point each)
    4. Crew president (3 points)
    5. Crew vice president (2 points)
    6. Other crew leadership positions (1 point each)
    7. Boatswain (3 points)
    8. Boatswain’s mate (2 points)
    9. Other ship leadership positions (1 point each)
    10. District, council, area, region, or national Order of the Arrow, Venturing, or Sea Scout office (3 points)
    11. Leadership positions outside of Scouting, such as head cheerleader, student body officer, Sunday school president, etc.
  4. Other leadership highlights (optional)

This program was discontinued in May 2016.[1]
