Leader Specific Training is taken after a new leader has completed Fast Start Training and This Is Scouting (was New Leader Essentials).

Once a volunteer has a solid overview of the BSA's values-based program, he or she can begin training for a specific Scouting position through Leader Specific training. This training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role. Because each course is designed for a specific leadership position, the training time varies. Leader Specific training has been developed for the following positions and their assistants:

Online or classroom Leader Training

Youth Protection training (YPT) is required for all BSA registered volunteers and must be retaken every two years. Some councils and units may require more frequent (e.g., annual) retaking of YPT). Check with your local council and unit to find out what their policies are.

In addition to YPT, registered adults should complete the following courses online at https://my.scouting.org:

  • Before the First Meeting
  • First 30 Days
  • Position Trained

Outdoor Leader Training

In addition to fulfilling other requirements, some unit leaders need outdoor-specific training.
