Historic Trails Award requirements emphasize cooperation between historic societies and Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturer units. A unit should establish a close relationship a local society as soon as possible when planning a historic activity - most communities have such societies.

"The Historic Trails Award is an award that may be earned by members of a Boy Scout troop, Varsity Scout team, or Venturing crew for hiking a trail listed in Nationally Approved Historic Trails and completing a project related to the trail."

Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venturers, and leaders are eligible to earn this award.

Historic Trails Award award is an option for the National Outdoor Badge for Adventure.

It is presented as a cloth (No. 00187) or leather (No. 00243) Boy Scout and Scouter, equipment decoration. . The award is not worn on the uniform. It may be worn on a jacket or patch vest or placed on blankets, backpacks, or other personal equipment.
