The Aviation (original) merit badge was one of the original 57 merit badges issued by the Boy Scouts of America in 1911.

Please note that Aviation is still a current merit badge! This page only explains the Aviation Merit Badge before it split in 1941, but it did get reintroduced in 1952.

Aviation is a discontinued merit badge. Aviation Merit Badge was one of the original merit badges in 1911. It was discontinued in 1941, being replaced by Aerodynamics and Aeronautics.

Merit badge requirements

1. Have a knowledge of the theory of aeroplanes, balloons, and dirigibles.

2. Have made a working model of an {27} aeroplane or dirigible that will fly at least twenty-five yards; and have built a box kite that will fly.

3. Have a knowledge of the engines used for aeroplanes and dirigibles, and be able to describe the various types of aeroplanes and their records.
