Troop Training Chair

The unit training chair is appointed by the committee chairman to ensure training opportunities are available, maintain training records and materials, and is responsible for BSA Youth Protection training. The goal of the unit training chair is to have 100 percent of the adult leadership trained in their positions of responsibilities.

Unit committee position

• Troop Committee in a Boy Scout troop
• Team Committee in a Varsity Scout team
• Crew Committee in a Venturing crew

Team Training Chair

Responsibilities

• Ensure troop/team/crew leaders and committee members have opportunities for training.
• Encourages new leaders to attend ongoing training such as roundtable, outdoor training, youth protection, and Wood Badge.
• Maintain an inventory of up-to-date training materials, videotapes, and other training resources.
• Work with the district training team in scheduling Fast Start training for all new leaders and adult family members.
• Be responsible for BSA Youth Protection training within the unit.
• Encourage periodic junior leader training within the troop/team at the council and national levels.
• Encourage nature of leadership training (VLSC, Kodiak and Kodiak X) within the crew at the district and council levels.
• Report to the unit committee at each meeting.
• Submit updated trained leader reports to the district and council.

Qualifications

“ Qualification. Adults citizens, or adult non-citizens who reside within the country, may register with the Boy Scouts of America in any capacity if they agree to abide by the Scout Oath or Promise and the Scout Law, to respect and obey the laws of the United States of America, and to subscribe to the precepts of the Declaration of Religious Principle. All leaders must be 21 years of age or older, except assistant Scoutmasters, assistant den leaders, assistant Cubmasters, assistant Webelos den leaders, and assistant Varsity Scout coaches, who must be 18 or older. ”

“ Youth Protection training is required for all BSA registered volunteers, regardless of their position. New leaders are required to take Youth Protection training before they submit an application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins. ”

The Building Blocks of New Leader Training     Leader Specific Training After completing all four parts, a leader is Trained.   This Is Scouting was "New Leader Essentials"   Fast Start Training Taken Immediately Youth Protection Prior to submitting Application <--- Basic Leader Training ---> is "This Is Scouting" plus "Leader Specific Training" Online, or Classroom Online, or Classroom Online, or Classroom Some are Online, others are classroom + outdoors only

Outdoor Leader Training (In addition to fulfilling other requirements, some unit leaders need outdoor training):

• Cub Scout Pack: BALOO – To have a Pack camp-out, at least one unit leader must be BALOO trained.
• Webelos Den Leaders: Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders (OWL) – To have a Webelos Den camp-out.
• Scoutmaster & Assistants and Varsity Scout Coach & Assistants: Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills – To have a camp-out.
• Wood Badge – Advanced Leadership skills for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturing, district and council Scouters.
• Sea Badge – Advanced Leadership skills for unit, district and council Sea Scouters.

Online or classroom Leader Training:
Youth protection (MANDATORY) – every registered adult must be re-certified every two years.

• Fast Start Training – online training you can take right now.
• Basic Leader Training includes:
  • This Is Scouting (formerly New Leader Essentials) – online overview of values, history, aims, and methods.
  • Leader Specific Training – provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs.

BSA Online Learning Center – provides a variety of materials courses.
