The Boy Scouts of America has created the Spirit of the Eagle Award as an honorary posthumous recognition of the contributions of Scouting youth (under the age of 21) who have lost their lives in an untimely accident or illness. It is offered by the National Court of Honor as a final salute and tribute in celebration of the recipient’s life, and publicly recognizes his or her contributions to the mission of Scouting.

A unit committee must complete and submit an application to the local council within six months of the youth member’s death. The application is reviewed, approved, and processed by the local council where the certificate, No. 641553, is ordered from National Supply.
