Scouter's Key Knot

The Scouter's Key is a set of recognitions for primary leaders who meet who complete advanced tenure, training and performance requirements in one (or more) of the following positions:

  • Cub Scout Cubmaster
  • Boy Scout Scoutmaster
  • Varsity Scout Coach
  • Venturing Advisor
  • Sea Scout Skipper
  • Roundtable commissioner
  • District/Assistant District commissioner
  • Unit commissioner
  • District committee chair (chair of one of the operating committees)


Scouter's Key requirements

 

Cub Scout Cubmaster

Tenure

  • Within a five-year period, complete at least three years of registered tenure as a Cubmaster or one year as a registered assistant Cubmaster plus two years as a registered Cubmaster. (This can include the tenure used to earn the Scouter's Training Award.)

Training

  • Complete basic training for Cubmasters.
  • Complete This Is Scouting training.
  • Attend a pow wow or university of Scouting (or equivalent), or attend at least four roundtables (or equivalent) during each year of the tenure used for this award.

Performance
Do the following during the tenure used for this award:

  • Achieve at least the Silver level of Journey to Excellence for at least two years. The Quality Unit Award was acceptable if the tenure used was prior to 2011.
  • Earn the National Summertime Pack Award at least once.
  • Conduct an annual pack planning session and have a published pack meeting/activity schedule for the pack’s parents in each year.
  • Participate in at least one additional supplemental or advanced training event at the council, area, region, or national level.

Boy Scout Scoutmaster

Tenure

  • Complete at least three years of registered tenure as a Scoutmaster within a five-year period. (This can include the tenure used to earn the Scouter's Training Award.)

Training

Performance
Do the following during the tenure used for this award:

  • Achieve at least the Silver level of Journey to Excellence for at least two years. The Quality Unit Award was acceptable if the tenure used was prior to 2011.
  • Earn the National Outdoor Challenge Award at least once.
  • Conduct an annual troop planning session and have a published troop meeting/activity schedule for the troop’s parents in each year.
  • Participate in at least one additional supplemental or advanced training event at the council, area, region, or national level.

Varsity Scout Coach

Tenure

  • Complete at least three years of registered tenure as a Varsity team Coach within a five-year period. (This can include the tenure used to earn the Scouter's Training Award.)

Training

  • Complete basic training for Coaches.
  • Complete This Is Scouting training.
  • Attend a university of Scouting (or equivalent), or attend at least four roundtables (or equivalent) during each year of the tenure used for this award.

Performance
Do the following during the tenure used for this award:

  • Achieve at least the Silver level of Journey to Excellence for at least two years. The Quality Unit Award was acceptable if the tenure used was prior to 2011.
  • Conduct an annual team planning session and have a published team meeting/activity schedule for the team’s parents in each year.
  • Participate in at least one additional supplemental or advanced training event at the council, area, region, or national level.

Varsity Crew Advisor

Tenure

  • Complete at least three years of registered tenure as a Venturing crew Advisor within a five-year period. (This can include the tenure used to earn the Scouter's Training Award.)

Training

  • Complete basic training for Advisors.
  • Complete This Is Scouting training.
  • Attend a university of Scouting (or equivalent), or attend at least four roundtables/teen leaders’ councils/Venturing officers association meetings (or equivalent) during each year of the tenure used for this award.

Performance
Do the following during the tenure used for this award:

  • Achieve at least the Silver level of Journey to Excellence for at least two years. The Quality Unit Award was acceptable if the tenure used was prior to 2011.
  • Have an annual crew planning session and have a published crew meeting/activity schedule for the crew in each year.
  • Participate in at least one additional supplemental or advanced training event at the council, area, region, or national level.

Unit Commissioner

Training

  • Complete the three-session training program outlined in Commissioner Basic Training Manual.
  • Complete personal coaching orientation including orientation projects.

Tenure

  • Complete three years as a registered commissioner within a 5-year period. Tenure for one award cannot be used for other training awards.

Performance


District Committee Key

Training

  • Review the District manual and the Highlight book for your position. Discuss the role of the district and your position with your committee chairman or district executive.

Tenure

  • Complete theDistrict Committee Training Workshop.
  • Complete three years as a district committee member within a 5-year period. Tenure for one award cannot be used for other training awards.

Performance

  • Your district must earn the Quality District Award at least once within a 3-year period.
  • Take part actively in six district committee meetings.
  • Help give leadership to eight projects of your operating committee or other projects as approved by your district executive (organizing a unit, running a training course, planning a camporee event, completing an FOS assignment, etc.).

District/Assistant District Commissioner

Training

Tenure

  • Complete three years as a registered commissioner within a 5-year period. Tenure for one award cannot be used for other training awards.

Training

Tenure

  • Complete three years as a registered commissioner within a 5-year period. Tenure for one award cannot be used for other training awards.
